Garner, McGirl Land MONSTER Bass To Win Stormy PotomacPrint
The Potomac Pro Teams Division, presented by Sanderson Marine held their 6th tournament on Sunday, July 27th.
This was the finale’ of a back-to-back weekend double header following yesterday’s tournament.
The weekend concept has been very popular on the Oneida Pro Teams trail for years now, but proved to be considerably less popular on the Potomac. Blame it on gas prices, NASCAR, or whatever but participation was down for this event. 2009 will see all single day weekend events.
Those not on hand today missed a few exciting events. First of all, it seems like U.S. Angler’s Choice tournaments on the Potomac are gaining notoriety for weighing in big bass. That’s not too surprising given the level of competition on our trail. Secondly, anyone watching TV at home Sunday probably saw the “sever thunderstorm warning” icon on the bottom of the screen. Those of us on hand at Smallwood State Park were able to witness it first hand around 2:00PM!
Thankfully, all of the 15 teams participating were cautiously keeping an eye scanned to the sky and made preparations to make it back to safety. James Brown and Rod Dawson were thankfully in a fast Skeeter as their return trip from up north at 70 MPH barely kept them ahead of the storms! Several teams elected to either tie up their boats with bilges running or pull them from the water and weigh their fish until the storm became so severe we had to temporarily close the scales so everyone could take cover.
The new AC tournament trailer offered relief to many while others chose to wait it out in the concession stand at the park. A quick head count revealed that all but one team was accounted for. Thankfully, this team was close by in a semi-protected area.
As the clock moved to 2:50, the worst of the weather…lightning, thunder, wind, and rain…had subsided enough to allow weigh-in to resume. All teams had weighed in with 5 minutes to go except for the lone boat that weathered the storm. Cliff and Lisa arrived back at 2:59 and soaked but safe.
Frank Karl and Mark Knapp had a solid weekend including a 5th place finish today with 12.38 pounds. That’s a very respectable weight especially with a shortened fishing day. They won the 2nd place option pot money of $60 which will pay for a little gas for them to make it back to PA. Nice work!
Craig Womack and Ed Womack rebounded nicely from a tough Saturday tournament to more than double their weight with a nice limit that weighed 13.82 pounds. They received a 1-year membership to BOAT U.S for their efforts. Way to go!
Finishing in 3rd place, and maximizing their time on the water today were Cliff Magnus and Lisa Walker filling in for Bernie. They brought a limit to the scales that weighed 14.97 pounds to win a total of $370 and 2 plaques. They reported catching all of the fish in their bag using 2 totally different methods in thick, matted grass. Good job!
